ABSTRACT
Henry Ford is the high priest of a new god, the prophet of a new religion. Ford declares that industry must never be a means of making money but a method of service. Anyone who serves does in the end make money, but anyone who concentrates upon making money soon ceases to serve and even to succeed. The only way to serve, however, is by mass production and at very low prices, at the same time paying a very high wage, so as to secure intelligent and energetic workers from whom remunerative service can be demanded. Mr. Ford entitled one of his philosophic essays: "Machinery, the new Messiah". In fact, he saw in the machine the salvation of humanity, once crushed beneath the weight of arduous, mean and fruitless drudgery, but now able to stand erect, since the machine is there to do all the dull and dirty work.
