ABSTRACT

Under ordinary circumstances, a marine insurance contract remains in force until the expiration of the insurance period.146 In some cases, however, an express term of the contract may enable either the assured or insurer to determine the policy before it expires. Such clauses are called cancellation clauses. They are contained in almost all marine insurance contracts147 and require the party who wishes to operate them to give notice to the other party. In cases where such a clause is operated, the insurance comes to an end on the stipulated date and any loss happening after the date of termination is not covered.
