ABSTRACT

Audiences all over the country laugh sympathetically; this is a Laurel and Hardy movie of the last days of the silent pictures. Something of the lazy space and time available for easygoing comedy to develop had, in the course of time, been identified with the label "the twenties." Yet the quick wit of cartoon and comedy is truer than pedestrian fact. The old movies of Laurel and Hardy tell the truth. Within the protective barriers of oceans, walled away from the threats hovering over other peoples, behind the barricades of an emotional immunity, for those possessed of a minimum amount of money or talent there was a liberating sense of possibility. What was to make the people of the twenties attractive to memory was the relation they had to possibility. Possibility was something that could be seized hold of quickly and easily.
