ABSTRACT

This chapter first explains the close connection between evaluation and the related concepts of assessment and testing. Next, it describes the three important characteristics of an effective evaluation measure, reliability, validity, and practicality, and discusses how to ensure that they are included in an instructors own evaluation procedures. Next, the chapter explains how to apply the principles of evaluation with learners, instructors, courses, and programs, and discusses some of the challenges that are often faced when doing an evaluation. Finally, the chapter discusses the problem of deception in evaluation, and how transparency, honesty, and trust between learners, instructors, and administrators can minimize its effects.
