ABSTRACT

The chapter looks to the future of ESP and addresses the questions of where the field is heading and what the future might bring ESP instructors in terms of opportunities and possible challenges. First, the chapter describes the future of ESP from four different perspectives: context, curriculum design, classroom practices, and research in ESP. Then, the chapter discusses the contentious issue of how learners should best position themselves within their discourse communities and the role that ESP should have in empowering learners to close the gap between their current skills/knowledge and the skills/knowledge that the discipline community might want and accept.
