ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a trade name, classification, approved indications for psychological disorders, available dosage forms, storage, and compatibility, usual dosage and administration, and clinically significant drug interaction of Quetiapine. Safety and efficacy of quetiapine pharmacotherapy for women who are breast-feeding and their neonates and infants have not been established. Avoid prescribing quetiapine pharmacotherapy to women who are breast-feeding. The exact mechanism of action of quetiapine’s action is complex and has not been fully determined. However, it appears to be primarily related to antagonism of dopamine and serotonin receptors within the CNS. Quetiapine is rapidly and well absorbed following oral ingestion. Peak blood concentrations generally are achieved in approximately 1.5 hours. Concurrent alcohol use may increase the CNS depressant action of quetiapine. Advise patients to avoid, or limit, their use of alcohol while receiving quetiapine pharmacotherapy.
