ABSTRACT

In this paper Heathcote addresses the needs of teachers who may be approaching drama for the first time. Although she never trained as a teacher and never held a teaching position in a school, Heathcote is extremely realistic about the challenges facing every teacher in the classroom. She points out that before any of us can relate successfully to others, we must first come to terms with ourselves and with our own needs. She reminds us that we teach as the people we are, and we need to meet the students as they are. Our humanity should not be separated from our teaching. It is our ability and willingness to be our authentic selves in the classroom that will lead to rewarding interactions, engagement and learning.
