ABSTRACT

On my frequent trips to Tokyo to keep abreast of the overall planning, I learned the Seventh Division, which had come to Japan from Korea in 1948 and which was occupying the island of Hokkaido, was to be reorganized. Its strength was to be increased by building up the understrength units with Republic of Korea soldiers who were sent to Japan for such training and incorporation. The Third Division, which was coming from the United States, and the First Marine Divi sion together with the Seventh Division, were to constitute the X Corps. Gen. Ned Almond was to be the X Corps commander in addition to his duties as chief-of-staff of the theater.
