ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a narrative intervention programme to enhance the understanding and facilitating the expression of narratives or stories in students with varied speech, language and communication needs in the secondary schools. It details the second session of the programme. In this session, students are to brainstorm what they think active listening is, what behaviours make up active listening and why good listening is so important. The students are to be encouraged to generate their own ideas about good listening and can be prompted from the suggestions included in the teaching notes that follow. The main aim of this session is to allow students to talk about their favourite stories and explore why they like specific stories, and also why they dislike some stories. There are many different types of stories and these different types are called story genres. A genre is a group or collection of stories or books with a similar theme or style.
