ABSTRACT

This chapter presents lesson focusing on how flowering plants change as they grow, a topic that has traditionally been part of the K–2 life-science curricula but is not included in the NGSS for K–2. In this lesson, students learn that even though seeds come in a variety of shapes and sizes, they all have the potential to develop into plants. They also discover that plants grow and change in predictable ways throughout their lives. The chapter reviews two books, namely A Seed Is Sleepy and Plantzilla, both focusing on the changes a plant goes through as it grows. In A Seed Is Sleepy, the author uses humanlike characteristics to help understand seeds better. In Plantzilla, the plant has lots of human characteristics. Both books are illustrated with paintings. Plantzilla tells a silly fictional story about a plant, and all the text is presented in the form of letters and postcards.
