ABSTRACT

Once the therapist and client have agreed on which of the latter’s problems they are going to focus on in the session, 1 it is important for them both to understand the problem. 2 There are a number of important issues that come to the fore when understanding the client’s problem in SST, which I will discuss in this session. These are:

Eliciting the client’s view of the problem and what accounts for it.

Offering a therapy-informed view of the problem and what accounts for it.

Understanding the problem in context.

Working with a specific example of the problem (past or future?).

Understanding how the client unwittingly maintains the problem.
