ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the interaction between theatrical references to the Shoah, memory and empathy. The first part explores the impact of the staging of the Anne Frank play in a small town near camp Westerbork. This is followed by two biographical sections on the director and the ensemble manager of the Dutch production. The final paragraph charts how the Shoah was picked up in postwar theater.
