ABSTRACT

In the current chapter, we will describe further the nature of language and communication needs of children who might benefit from SCIP. Diagnostic practice and contemporary terminology will be outlined. The communication characteristics of these children with persistent social communication needs will be presented in three themes of social communication, pragmatics, and high-level language processing (expression and comprehension). The long-term prospects for these children and the relation with emotional and behavioural development in later childhood is also considered.
