ABSTRACT

The word espionage probably derives from an old French verb espier, meaning to see at a distance, or to see or discover something intended to be hid. Intelligence includes espionage which, as already shown, is one of its arms or tools. Espionage is usually set up for the purpose of discovering the answer not otherwise available to a particular problem. Security is also concerned with the prevention and detection of sabotage, subversive activity and crime. Security divides into protective security and detective security. The purposes of all security devices in espionage are to prevent discovery and limit the damage that discovery may cause. The espionage system is the basis of sabotage and subversive organisations wherever they are found. Sabotage and subversion are, of course, not the only functions which can be based on an espionage type of organisation.
