ABSTRACT

Session 5 explores how the complex experience of chronic pain increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. A scientific rationale for the link between chronic pain and low mood and depression is provided to help the client understand how their experience of depression and anxiety is linked to brain changes that come from persistent pain. Strategies for mood management are discussed incorporating inspirational stories from the Quran and Hadith. There is also a discussion about the importance of sleep hygiene to help improve mental health with a reference to Islamic perspectives on sleep. A relaxation exercise finishes the session
