ABSTRACT

The digital economy comprises the billions of worldwide online business and financial transactions that occur daily. In today’s digital economy, the Internet and EC serve as the central hub by which all economic activity occurs. The digital economy can take many forms ranging from online shopping to online hotel, car, and airline reservations to OTT video streaming services. This, in turn, enables such economic activity to be global in scope as well as making the delivery of goods and services both fast and immediate. In both this chapter and Chapter 6, we introduce The Digital Economy Business Model as a way to explain seven network design principles. They include 1) information search, 2) exchange, 3) interactivity, 4) personalization, 5) mobility, 6) virtual communication, and 7) convergence. These seven network design principles provide the structural basis for today’s digital economy.
