ABSTRACT

Empirical evidence from around the world is presented to show that physical infrastructure can have an impact on improving coverage as well as learning. The quality of the physical environment is associated with improvement in attendance, motivation, and educational outcomes of students and teachers. In this way, it can contribute to educational outcomes, including labor market performance. Although there are other educational inputs associated with the improvement of educational quality, the factor of the physical infrastructure itself often has a significant positive impact. It is important to note that improving learning requires a mix of investments supporting multiple inputs, and only when all of them are taken into account can significant improvements be achieved. To optimize investment in education, it is desirable for the authorities to understand the crucial role of physical conditions and infrastructure in interacting with other education inputs. By doing so, investments in education are more likely to improve outcomes in education.
