ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the support for students with intensive behavioral needs that require individualized, function-based interventions. It begins by exploring variables that lead to challenging behavior, namely, motivating operations, antecedents (discriminative stimuli), and reinforcing consequences. Then, methods for conducting functional behavioral assessment (FBA) are discussed. These are indirect assessment, direct assessment, and functional analysis. Examples of challenging behaviors maintained by different contingencies of reinforcement are presented. Sample FBA forms, an FBA summary, and other FBA resources are provided throughout the chapter.
