ABSTRACT

In Shapedoku puzzles, there are no bordered regions to provide additional constraints on number placement. A detailed description of the attributes is given following the discussion of the solution strategy for this puzzle. In solving this puzzle, it is best to start with some of the standard Sudoku rules, filling in numbers so that each number appears exactly once in each row and column. The rest of the puzzle can now be filled in following the standard Sudoku rules. It is helpful to note that the four noncircled 2s can be connected to make a parallelogram, albeit a very narrow one. Once a grid size has been chosen, there are several ways to approach the creation of Shapedoku puzzles—either placing all of the numbers first and then identifying some shapes that can be found in the puzzle or creating a puzzle with specific shapes and arrangements in mind.
