ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors reflect on the best practices for implementing culturally relevant and culturally sustaining pedagogy in remote English language arts instruction. As discussed in this chapter, culturally relevant and culturally sustaining instructional practices are essential to all English language arts instruction and can be effectively utilized in remote learning to provide teaching and learning activities that center students’ identities and experiences. Through the information in this chapter, the authors discuss key characteristics of culturally relevant and sustaining teaching and provide suggestions to consider when putting these ideas into action in remote instruction. First, they explore important aspects of culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogy, focusing on how it can be connected to remote English language arts instruction. Then they reflect on why it’s so important to implement culturally relevant and sustaining instruction in remote contexts. They follow this information with an instructional snapshot section that provides an example of Jennifer’s work with her middle school students. Then the authors share key recommendations for teachers to consider when putting culturally relevant and sustaining English language arts instruction in action. Finally, they discuss how the ideas in this chapter can be implemented in a range of modalities.
