ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), a school-wide, team-oriented, evidence-based, data-driven program that has demonstrated positive student outcomes. PBIS is designed to acknowledge and reinforce positive student behavior by continuously teaching about expected behaviors in various school settings. PBIS generally reduces discipline problems and promotes a positive school climate with more time for learning, a greater sense of safety, and improved academic outcomes. It provides an effective alternative to punitive and inconsistent behavior management. It is a tiered approach that integrates with other programs and the MTSS framework. This chapter also highlights the Interconnected Systems Framework, which can function within MTSS and integrates PBIS with mental health services. A section is devoted to implementing culturally responsive and equitable school-wide PBIS. This chapter concludes with a detailed case study of a school district’s six-year timeline for implementing complementary programs. This long-term partnership for the integration of service delivery frameworks and programs provides an instructive model for others having similar implementation goals.
