ABSTRACT

A civil engineer by training, Juan Carlos Fonnegra spent the first part of his career working as an engineer and then manager on projects around the world for Veolia Water. In July 2012, he switched to the energy sector, joining BP in Chicago as a supply analyst. In 2018, Juan Carlos left BP to return to his native Colombia, where he joined state-owned producer Ecopetrol as head of crude oil marketing and trading. He moved home to Colombia in 2018 to join their national oil company Ecopetrol as head of crude oil marketing and trading. The changes on the commercial side really began in 2017 when Juan's boss joined from Chevron. His goal was to transform the way that Ecopetrol handles its commercial activity by applying his experience of how international companies operate. In terms of mentality, trading was not part of Ecopetrol’s traditional DNA.
