ABSTRACT

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined and described in detail, with reference to the most recent classification in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Early detection is the top priority for designing and providing appropriate intervention, particularly for communication skills and social development. Family involvement in any planned intervention is stressed. Specific methods and programmes described include TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication-handicapped Children), Young Autism Program (Lovaas), Pivotal Response Training (PRT), SCERTS Model (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, Transactional Support), The Son-Rise Program®. Additional approaches include the use of Social Stories, and the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).
