ABSTRACT

There are a range of therapeutic techniques that are unique to the multi-family therapy context. These techniques can be used to manage different aspects of the group process, such as improving group cohesion, managing affect, offering containment, helping participants to take different perspectives, and so on. This chapter describes key multi-family therapy techniques, providing clinicians with guidance on how to get the most out of the rich therapeutic process. This includes descriptions of common multi-family group techniques, such as the use of “fishbowls” and “foster families”, as well as more general discussion and guidance around how to connect with individuals, families and the group as a whole.
