ABSTRACT

The word “must” in English covers a variety of meanings (and connotations); there are several different words or expressions in Chinese to represent it. To choose the accurate Chinese word to reflect the notion of “must” in any specific context may be a fairly complicated task for English speaking learners because under-differentiation can be a significant cause of errors. This section explains how to use Chinese expressions comparable to “must” in terms of grammatical features, sentence patterns, and connotations.
