ABSTRACT

"First” is a common yet versatile word with various meanings and functions. The Chinese word that immediately comes to mind to define it is usually if! "第一 (dì yī);” however, it is the contexts and sentence patterns that determine its proper counterpart in Chinese. In other words, there are several comparable Chinese words or expressions. This section discusses the use of “first” as a noun, an adjective and as an adverb in Chinese. In addition, its antonyms, if any, and other related words are included in the discussions.
