ABSTRACT

Massachusetts has continued to remain one of the most active states in the area of labor legislation and it still ranks among the “leaders” in many areas, but it can no longer claim the position of almost unique supremacy it once held. This chapter discusses history of each of the state labor federations, a description of the eventual merger, and some activities of organized labor in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts State Industrial Union Council in Massachusetts was one of the nation’s pioneers in curtailing communist influence in the American labor movement. A Legislative Advisory Committee consisting of the members of the Executive Council, together with the Chairmen of the aforementioned eight standing committees, was also established by the State Labor Council’s constitution. The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce has the longest history of any of the employer organizations operating in Massachusetts.
