ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the changing nature of U.S. land, sea and air borders. In particular, it charts the growing securitization of borders and the creation of government apparatus to secure the southern U.S. land border in particular. Agencies, such as the U.S. Border Patrol, which are responsible for securing U.S. international borders are also discussed. Finally, sidebar sections discuss specific contemporary border security issues such as the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and the unaccompanied minor crisis. The chapter includes an interview with former Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano.
