ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 introduced key terms and concepts in risk analysis, and I used these to construct a process model for this book (Figure 1.1). This chapter provides more depth about hazards, events, impacts, and disasters. The chapter has four parts, beginning with distinguishing among hazards, events, impacts, and disasters. Next, it compares the geography of seniors in the United States with the geography of selected hazards, events, and disaster declarations. The bulk of the chapter uses literature to assess the relative risk of seniors to major environmental hazard events. As context for Chapters 4–7, the final section looks at the hazard events we plan for and others that we do not.
