ABSTRACT
In none of these cases is the active subject mentioned, and it has often been pointed out that this is the general rule with passive sentences in many languages (Arabic, Lettish, old Latin, Wackernagel VS 143). Statistical investigations made by some of my pupils showed me many years ago that between 70 and 94 per cent. of passive sentences in various English writers contained no mention of the active subject.
