ABSTRACT
The term hustler (Dutch for “shake” or “jog”) connotes a person who works energetically to obtain money. The term was associated with the game of pool before it became the name given to male prostitutes. Until the beginning of the AIDS pandemic, there was little academic interest in male prostitution; however, since the mid-1980s a dramatic increase in research on male sex workers has occurred.
