ABSTRACT

A n y adjective in Ca ta l an can function as a n o u n s imply by becoming the head o f a n o u n phrase; this often involves it fol lowing an article o r a demonstrative (but not necessarily so). We deal separately below wi th one product o f this process: nomina l i za t ion o f an adjective when a n o u n is suppressed (9.1.1). Cons t ruc t ions using the 'neuter' article el/lo w i th adjectives are discussed at 9.2.1 and ' intensif icat ion' o f adjectives w i t h el/lo at 27.2.3. M a n y cases i n the first category are as famil iar as nouns as they are as adjectives: els grecs 'G reek people ' , un cec 'a b l i nd man ' / ' a b l ind person ' , un boig ' a madman ' , els veils i els joves 'the young and the o l d ' , els exiliats 'exiles', etc.
