ABSTRACT

The name Esmin Green may sound familiar, but let’s pause to remember who she was and what happened to her on

June 18, 2008. Cameras panning the emergency waiting area of Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn were the only eyes that told the truth: Green had been waiting hours for medical attention, collapsed on the floor, went into convulsions, and died. Even then, no one ran to her side. Eventually, after more than an hour, an indifferent medic prodded Green’s body with her foot, like one does to a dead insect to make sure it won’t crawl and scatter again. Three minutes later, a team appeared in the area.
