ABSTRACT

Silver fir oil is the essential oil obtained from the needles of the silver fir, Abies alba Mill. In Europe, the essential oil obtained from the needles is said to be used in perfumes, room sprays, deodorants and bath preparations. Silver fir oil is also employed in inhalants for the treatment of colds, and in medicinal preparations against rheumatism and similar ailments and is said to have soothing qualities. Silver fir oil is a colorless mobile liquid which has a fresh coniferous, slightly camphoraceous odor. The yield of essential oil from the needles of Abies alba Mill. generally varies from 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. The main producing countries of this oil are France, Montenegro, Poland, and Austria. Contact allergy to silver fir oil has been reported in two publications, but no cases of allergic contact dermatitis from the oil have been identified.
