ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an insight into the fundamental laws and equations governing the fluid flow in a MEMS-based microfluidic device. These fluid flow equations are vital to an understanding before diving into any application related to this field. While scaling down the processes from macro-scale to micro-scale, it is essential to question and understand the fluid flow relationship because of the change in dimensional scale. Within micro-channels, the flow is usually laminar and thus hinders the mixing process. Specifically, when microfluidic devices are used, T-sensors which are used nowadays, play a crucial role in the diffusion mechanism. Therefore, the understanding of fluid flow has perhaps an edge in utilizing the concept of microfluidics for low-cost and rapid POC devices that can be operated without hiring trained professionals or setting up hefty laboratory infrastructure.
