ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the approach proposed for the research in order to achieve its objective: the optimum design and control of Urban Wastewater Systems (UWwS). In addition, the approach should have the right balance between the traditional design approaches and the use of advance modelling tools and optimization algorithms. The conceptual framework for model based design and control includes six steps: problem definition, design of UWwS components, design of operational strategies, implementation of the model of the system, optimization and post-processing. For instance, the sizes of the pipes in drainage depend on the design rainfall and the rainfall is the major disturbance in the operation of an urban wastewater system. The objective is to identify the optimum design solution for the sewer network considering the interaction with the treatment plant and the river.
