ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the reconstruction of time-dependent sources in heat conduction from various transient measurements. Since the unknown is a time-dependent quantity the rule of thumb is to seek measuring a quantity having the same time-dependent meaning, e.g. a temperature measurement at a fixed space point, a boundary heat flux or the mass/energy of the thermal system. Various non-local variants of the inverse source problems are discussed. Stable solutions are obtained by the boundary element method combined with the Tikhonov regularization of various orders. The choice of the regularization parameter is thoroughly discussed.
