ABSTRACT
In addition to cost, the type of transportation system used
depends on the type of biomass, the form that it is in,
whether the transportation will be off-road or over-the-
road or both, and the method of transportation. The loading
and unloading are part of the overall transport systems,
since these operations can constitute a major portion of the
transportation time and expense and depend on transporta-
tion method and biomass form. Table 1 summarizes the
current transportation practices for various common biomass
resources. These practices serve a baseline from which
improvements and new technologies are developed. Raw
biomass used for energy and biobased products can
be represented by all the forms shown in Table 1, and
variations of the methods of transportation shown in
Table 1 are frequently used for transporting biomass
materials.
