ABSTRACT

To aid in ECG interpretation, it's important to obtain a high-quality recording, and the guidance provided in this chapter is based upon the current clinical guidelines of the Society for Cardiological Science and Technology in the United Kingdom. This chapter discusses the procedure for recording an optimal 12-lead ECG, and covers how to explain the procedure to the patient and obtain their consent, how to ensure that the patient is comfortable and how to prepare the skin before applying the electrodes. The chapter also describes how to place the electrodes correctly, when to use ECG filters and how to label the ECG recording appropriately. Finally, the chapter emphasizes the importance of ensuring that any clinically urgent abnormalities are acted upon.
