ABSTRACT

Even advanced learners of English for academic purposes (EAP) struggle with writing in their own academic disciplines. Many of them assume that academic vocabulary is universal and can be used in any field. It is therefore important to emphasize that academic expectations of graduate students in Engineering might be very different from what is required of students in Media and Communication, for example. In academic English classes where there are students from various majors, it is often nearly impossible for a teacher to provide each student with guidelines for writing in their specific disciplines. It is therefore essential that students familiarize themselves with the type of writing that is characteristic of their own disciplines autonomously. The present lesson proposes a discovery exercise in which students need to research discipline-specific vocabulary with the help of a corpus.
