ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a step-by-step guide on teaching in an authentic way. Unlike many textbooks that frequently teach expressions imagined by authors to represent how speakers may use the language, this corpus-based lesson plan teaches students to recognize, practice, and produce authentic expressions for the speech act of confirming/verifying information. An additional lesson plan is provided for the speech act of providing explanations/elaborations. The MICASE corpus contains the transcribed speech of university students, faculty, advisors, and staff as they engage in classroom lectures, discussions, advising sessions, etc. Therefore, it is most beneficial for students of English for educational purposes.
