ABSTRACT

In this chapter I begin the discussion of remarriage and stepfamilies in Asia with a review of the increasing international research attention given to families where one or both of the spouses are parents whether or not the children are their natural children or from a previous relationship terminated through divorce, separation or death of the partner. I then examine two main aspects of the stepfamily situation: the roles and challenges faced by adults in stepfamilies, and the changes and variations in family relationships experienced by the children. Finally, I discuss the future trends in research on stepfamilies, with emphasis on the social and cultural contexts.
