ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the historical, professional and policy context of urban design. This overview is intended to provide a framework for exploring the meaning and scope of urban design in contemporary planning and urban development. At the same time, it aims to provide the reader with a ‘route map’ to further reading about contemporary urban design ideas.
