ABSTRACT

This technique was originally developed during the live supervision of a family consisting of a mother, father, and six children. During an enactment of the family's response to Father's anger, the following pattern became clear. As the mother tried to discipline the children, Father would, in an attempt to support Mother, take over very aggressively, yelling and making demands. The children would then scatter and seek comfort from their mother because of their mutual fear of Father's behavior. This resulted in the father being more isolated and left out of the family and set up the pattern to repeat itself. Any attempts the family had made to change the pattern had not worked as all their solutions involved the father trying to take over power and ending up very angry when he was not successful.
