ABSTRACT

The production of fluent speech is one of the most complex skills humans acquire. In order to be able to sustain fluency, words must be retrieved and produced at a rate of two or three per second. The aim of research in this field (across many different disciplines) is to determine HOW this occurs—there are three key questions:

What are the levels of processing in retrieving words for speech production (lexical access)?

What is the time course of activation of levels of processing for speech production?

How are the retrieved lexical items prepared for articulation?
