ABSTRACT

Trauma is a key element in understanding addiction. The links between addiction and other determinants of and influences on women’s and men’s health-such as the experience of trauma and violence-are important to all disciplines interested in addiction treatment, prevention and harm reduction. Despite strong associations among substance use, trauma, gender-based violence and mental health concerns, and the range of social determinants of health including gender, there has been insufficient research synthesizing their complex interrelationships. When it has occurred, the study of these intersections and their treatments has typically remained discipline-specific.
