ABSTRACT
Steven M. Wise argues that legal rules that may have made good sense in the past may make good sense no longer. As the scientific evidence of the capacities of nonhuman animals such as the great apes continues to mount, it is apparent that treating animals as things is unjust. Wise argues on both legal and philosophical grounds that the “practical autonomy” exhibited by many animals is sufficient to justify the attribution of basic legal rights.
