ABSTRACT

Handwriting instruction began with pencils and printing (manuscript), with children graduating to pen and cursive script as they moved into the fourth year of school. Handwriting is the process of forming letters and words by hand using a tool, such as pen or pencil, in order to record a message. Teaching handwriting refers to the teaching of skills relating to letter formation, a process that has in the past been seen as a relatively easy to teach, and learn, mechanical skill. The teaching of handwriting can be integrated into the writing process and during independent writing, when teachers can reinforce correct letter formations. During handwriting instruction, a stable base of support enables children to focus on letter formations rather than controlling their body. Developing the foundation skills that enable children to become proficient with handwriting and keyboarding (typing) begins long before children commence school.
