ABSTRACT

Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society (Faro) has potential to promote heritage as meaningful and beneficial for societal progress, European unification and its fundamental values. To encourage public involvement in the heritage process, Faro promotes the heritage community, a group of people who value specific aspects of cultural heritage, which they wish, within the framework of public action, to sustain and transmit to future generations. Given that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community often relied on word of mouth to spread information and to relate stories and history, it may seem difficult to use traditional research methods when uncovering queer heritage. Educating and engaging the public at all levels promotes an inclusive understanding of heritage, and encourages meaningful contributions from all sections of society. The public thus recognise heritage as a right, one which directly improves their lives, and that they are the ultimate creators of that heritage.
