ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a brief overview of the Pacific Northwest. The state of historic preservation is then described in the chapter, incorporating assessments of those groups State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPOs), tribes, federal agencies, and cultural resource management (CRM) providers that play a role in implementing National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The chapter examines the descriptions of efforts underway across the Northwest to confront weak spots and improve the effectiveness of historic preservation in the region. The chapter explores those colleagues throughout the historic preservation community about the general state of compliance. It discusses a survey to the CRM community across the four states using Survey Monkey. Many federal agencies actively work with tribal staff on Section 106 and NEPA reviews, resource planning, protection of human remains, and inadvertent discoveries. The NHPA has given voice to Native American tribes and supported their efforts to protect and access places and resources important to them.
